Singapore Anglican Community Services
The passion to make a difference in the lives of others spurred Mrs. Catherine Thomas and Mr. Francis Thomas to start a ministry more than 50 years ago, to provide a clinic and counselling for the poor. Later, the ministry evolved into SACS which steadily grew in their mission to provide hope and care to the lost, broken-hearted and the handicapped.
Today, SACS is an Institution of Public Character (IPC) providing professional services to over 2000 clients. It serves three distinctive groups of clients: those recovering from mental illnesses, disadvantaged women, and individuals with autism. SACS aims to provide refuge and heal wounded hearts that are marginalized by society.
SACS has three social enterprises:

Devastated widow found hope
“After losing my husband, it was difficult for me to cope as a single mother with two young children, and one of them is an autistic nine-year-old. At 44 years old, I couldn’t find a job that offered flexible hours and be a full-time caregiver. The opportunity to work for Mother and Child Project has not only benefited me financially but emotionally as well. I am able to do what I love – express my creativity in sewing, as well as take care of those I love. The Mother and Child Project is an answer to my prayers, truly a blessing to me and my children.”

A win-win solution for the mother of two dyslexic sons
“I was the first mother to graduate from the Mother and Child Project Dressmaking Course. As a single mother with health issues and two dyslexic sons, I found extreme difficulty in getting a job. The Mother and Child Project has provided me with an opportunity to work from home and to support my family. “

MOSES led the road to recovery
“Since 1984, I suffered from epilepsy. After my mother passed away in 2012, I was devastated and fell into depression. I vividly remember that very dark period in my life, when all I did was cry buckets and buckets of tears. After being referred to Simei Care Centre (SCC), I chose to participate actively in the rehab work at the MOSES workshop. The concerts, counselling sessions and MOSES workshops, especially the crafting of batik notebooks, have made me a happier person. They were the helping hands on my road to recovery. I used to have 15 epilepsy episodes per month which frightened me. But it has gone down to just once a month. I enjoy living at SCC because each time I wake up in the morning, an SCC staff is always there for me. I am no longer alone. Above all, I am happy that I do not have to take anti-depressants anymore. I can proudly say that I have overcome depression. “
